Migrate Server 2003 to 2008R2 Active Directory and FSMO Roles

How to Transfer FSMO role from existing Windows 2003 Server to another new Windows 2008 Server:

Ensure both windows 2003(PDC) and windows 2008(ADC) are updated with latest Service Packs and patches updated.
step 1:
Join windows 2008 server to existing domain.
step 2:
Insert Windows 2008 CD in Windows 2003 Server and run
d:\support\adprep32.exe /forestprep
( if PDC is a 64bit OS then use adprep.exe instead of adprep32.exe)
step 3:
Now in PDC, “Raise Domain function Level” to Windows server 2003, if it is in windows 2000 native mode. ( You can do this by right clicking domain name inside “Active Directory users and computers” panel)
step 4:
Now run
d:\support\adprep32.exe /domainprep
step 5:
Now go to ADC (win2k8) and run “dcpromo” and add win2k8 server to existing forest and add as additional domain controller to existing domain.
Select “Yes” when it warns you saying
“you will not be able to install a Read Only Domain Controller in this domain because “adprep/rodcprep” was not yet run. Do you want to continue?”
Now in next step select both DNS Server and GC options for this domain controller.
follow thru the procedure and complete the installation in w2k8 server.
step 6:
Moving 5 FSMO roles:
  1. Schema master
  2. Domain Naming Master
  3. Infrastructure Master
  4. Relative ID (RID) Master
  5. PDC Emulator
To accomplish above task, go to W2k3 server (PDC) and Run
from command prompt
(This will add a snap-in to MMC)
step 7:
and select “Active Directory Schema” to add
step 8:
Now right click AD Schema and select “Change Domain Controller”. specify the target server name (ADC W2k8 server in our case) and click OK.
step 9:
Again Right Click “AD Schema” and select “Operation Masters” and change it.
Till Now we have transferred “Schema Master” Role to new server.
step 10:
In W2k3 server, go to “Active Directory Domains and Trusts” tool right click “AD Domains and Trusts” and click
“CONNECT TO DOMAIN CONTROLLER” option and select W2K8 target server (important step)
and then select “Operations Master”. Now in the pop-up menu you click “Change” option to transfer the DN master role to W2K8 server from PDC.
step 11:
Go to W2K8 server ( ADC) and open “AD users and Computers” and right click <domain name>
and select “Operations Master”.
 From here you can change
RID , PDC and INFRASTURCTURE Master to your W2K8(ADC) server.
after doing above three changes, go to command prompt and check who holds FSMO roles by typing “netdom query fsmo” and ensure the W2k8 holds all 5 roles now.
step 12:
how to transfer DHCP server to new server ?
Go to your PDC Dhcp server and stop the Dhcp service.
open command prompt and type
“netsh dhcp dump > c:dhcp.txt “
this will export dhcp settings to the text file.
Now stop DHCP service in new server if running and copy this file to new server W2k8 and run following command
“netsh exec > c:dhcp.txt and start the dhcp services in new server.
also ensure you change your Primary and Secondary DNS server, WINS server settings in dhcp to new server W2k8.
step 13:
Finally last step is to decommission W2k3 old server.
Now unplug NIC and log in to new W2k8 server.
Go to your Advanced network settings and add the old server W2k3 IP address as additional IP in the new server NIC card and change the DNS settings pointing the new server.
